The teaching and learning of Auslan at Hilton Primary School supports one of the school’s six key priorities: Relationships and Partnerships. Through the study of Auslan, students develop an appreciation and understanding of Deaf culture while building skills in inclusive communication, collaboration and respectful interaction with others.
At Hilton Primary School, students from Year 1 to Year 6 participate in Auslan as a Second Language Learner program. The program is aligned with both the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) Auslan curriculum and the Western Australian Curriculum (SCSA). Hilton Primary School follows the Languages – Auslan (L2 pathway), which is specifically designed for students who are not typically members of the Deaf community.
The curriculum supports students to develop their skills in communicating through handshape, movement, facial expression and body language, while also deepening their understanding of the linguistic and cultural richness of the Deaf community. Through the integration of the ACARA and Western Australian Curriculum frameworks, students are provided with sequential and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that build their receptive and expressive language skills across the primary years.
The Auslan program provides students with opportunities to engage in authentic and meaningful language experiences through visual communication, storytelling, games, role-play and interactive learning activities. Students explore important concepts such as identity, culture, connection and inclusion while developing confidence in using Auslan in a variety of social and educational contexts.
Through the teaching of Auslan, Hilton Primary School aims to foster an inclusive learning environment where diversity is valued and all students are encouraged to communicate with empathy, confidence and respect. The program not only develops language capability but also strengthens students’ social awareness and understanding of accessible communication practices within the wider community.
