Science

Hilton Primary School students love Science and look forward to our annual Science Week to engage in additional Science activities, events and competitions around a different theme each year. Our teachers collaborate to plan and assess using the WA Science Curriculum which aligns with the Primary Connections resources and the Five E’s approach to learning: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.

Hilton Primary School has been working closely with the CSIRO Scientists in Schools (SIS) for more than ten years. With our whole school focus on the principles of Sustainability, we teach and learn in our outside classrooms as often as possible. In 2019, our Year 6 students facilitated our learning about bush regeneration as they designed our Bush Trail, which was constructed by parents and staff. A current focus in on the integration of Two Knowledges: Noongar and Western Science, as applied to our natural and managed environment at Hilton Primary School. We also embraced learning about Bees from a visiting Apiarist and we especially enjoyed eating honey!

We are conscious of current trends in Science teaching and resource the school accordingly. We have been very fortunate to receive a state government grant to refit and resource a new Science – STEAM room for the school, due for completion late in 2020. We are very excited to explore the additional Science teaching and learning possibilities that our new facilities will support.
