Culture through Sport

On Thursday 22nd of June 2023 at Fremantle Oval, the year Five and Six students from Hilton primary and several other schools went to an event named Culture Through Sport. Culture Through Sport was run by the Stephen Michael foundation and taught us Aboriginal games and about Aboriginal culture.

The first thing we did was walk into the Bulldogs club room and were introduced to Stephen Michael. After Stephen Michael came up and talked, Lindy Lou came up and showed us some paintings and what they meant. Everyone asked lots of questions about them and she answered them all.

After we left the clubroom we went out to play the games we were split into two groups (group A and group B) and we went to play. There were four games Micha Bomba, which was like hockey but with a bigger ball, Jump and Pin, which was a tag but with a ball and you couldn’t run with it, Illy which was like like rugby and Edor where you had a belt with velcro on it and smaller belt attached to it and you had to rip the other teams belts off to win.

After all the games everyone went back in the club room and chose some traditional food. There were fruit salads, different types of buns with different things inside and different types of desert like pink cupcakes, shortbread cookies and rivermint brownies. After we ate the Moorditj Mob from Wesley College came up and showed everyone traditional dances, after that everyone got on the bus and drove back to school.

In the end everyone loved the day, it was a great way to teach children Aboriginal Culture through sport, talking and food.
